Select the row by shaft diameter
This reference lists selected metric parallel-key and keyway dimensions for nominal shaft diameters shown in the manufacturer’s DIN 6885-1 chart. Start with the shaft diameter, then read key width and height, shaft keyway width and depth, and hub keyway dimensions. The dimensions are in millimetres. Values belong to the stated DIN 6885-1 layout; a keyway made to another standard or radial position can use different dimensions.
For example, the source lists a 24 mm shaft with an 8 × 7 mm key, an 8 mm shaft keyway width and a 3.3 mm shaft depth. It lists a 40 mm shaft with a 12 × 8 mm key and a 3.3 mm shaft depth. These examples show that the key size changes in standard steps rather than scaling continuously with shaft diameter.
Understand the dimension labels
The key width b and height h describe the parallel key. Shaft keyway depth t1 is measured from the shaft surface to the keyway bottom; hub depth t2 is measured from the hub bore surface to its keyway bottom. The source also gives reference diameters associated with the keyway geometry. Check the original cross-section before applying these dimensions, because diameter and depth conventions depend on the drawing view and standard.
Keyway width tolerances affect the fit between the key and slots. The manufacturer’s notes distinguish tight, loose and sliding fit combinations. Do not assume that a nominal width is a machining tolerance: the print or purchase specification must name the intended fit and tolerance class. A key that fits one slot may still be wrong for the other component or for the required torque transfer.
Confirm standard part and shaft size
The chart includes selected discrete shaft diameters. If the actual shaft size falls between listed values, do not interpolate the key size. Use the controlling standard table and the drawing’s nominal diameter range to find the correct row. Boundary endpoints matter: a range-based standard can specify which endpoint is included, while a vendor chart may list individual diameters. Confirm the size range in the applicable source before selecting a key.
DIN 6885-1 and DIN 6885-2 differ mainly in the radial position of the parallel key, according to the manufacturer’s technical notes. Their dimensions should not be combined. This page focuses on the 6885-1 high-form configuration represented by the linked reference. Check the actual drawing note for the part and do not convert between layouts without design approval.
Use tolerances and fit notes
The manufacturer shows multiple keyway width tolerance choices for different fit outcomes. A tight fit, loose fit or sliding fit changes the width tolerance combination. The chart’s nominal dimensions alone are not enough to inspect a finished slot. Read the tolerance class, datum and measurement method from the part drawing or governing specification, then verify both shaft and hub components.
Keyway size also does not establish torque capacity. Torque transmission depends on key and hub material, engagement length, contact pressure, shaft strength, loading, fatigue and applicable design factors. Use a key design calculation and the relevant engineering standard when sizing a connection; do not treat this dimensional lookup as a strength or safety rating.
Source and scope
The values are selected from JW Winco’s published DIN 6885-1 technical table. Its catalog is a manufacturer reference, and the linked document should be checked for current availability and applicable product revisions. The table is an orientation aid for common dimensions, not a replacement for a controlled drawing or licensed standard. If a standard revision or customer specification governs the part, use that source as the authority.
Before machining, confirm shaft diameter, key form, key length, slot position, width tolerance and the intended fit. Verify the actual key and hub against the same design basis. A qualified mechanical designer should review the connection when torque, reversal, shock or safety-critical operation is involved.
