Find the small-pulley wrap angle

The table pairs Gates’ listed pulley geometry ratio (D − d) / C with the corresponding small-pulley wrap angle and arc-of-contact factor G. Here D and d are pulley diameters and C is center distance, using the manual’s conventions. As the ratio increases from 0 to 1.5, the listed wrap angle decreases from 180° to 83° and G decreases from 1.00 to 0.65.

The ratio is a geometry lookup, not a belt-speed ratio. Use the factor with the belt construction and power-rating method identified in the cited Gates manual.

Apply the correction in context

G adjusts belt power rating for arc of contact in the cited design method. The manual also uses belt-length correction and belt-section power ratings. A wrap factor alone cannot determine belt count, service life or capacity.

For example, at a listed geometry ratio of 0.50 the manual gives a small-pulley wrap angle of 151° and G = 0.93. Keep the table’s exact source basis with any calculation.

Confirm current manufacturer data

The source is a 2004 Gates industrial V-belt manual. Belt products and design guidance can change, and the table is specifically shown with Super HC MN / Super HC ratings. Confirm current Gates recommendations for the selected section, construction, speed ratio, pulley diameters and service conditions before release.

Do not reuse these values as a universal correction for synchronous belts, timing belts or a different manufacturer’s belt system.

Check the geometry inputs

Use diameters measured on the belt datum basis specified by the manufacturer, and use center distance C for the same drive layout. Small-pulley wrap is the controlling angle in this correction table. A changed center distance changes the geometry ratio and therefore the lookup value.

Do not extrapolate beyond the listed ratio range. If the drive falls outside the table, use current manufacturer design software or ask the belt supplier to review the arrangement.

Read the paired angle and factor

The angle and G value are a matched pair from the same manual row. At 180° wrap, G is 1.00; a smaller wrap reduces the factor applied to the listed belt rating in that design method. Do not mix a wrap angle from one geometry with a factor from another row.

The table uses rounded ratios in 0.10 steps. If a calculation lands between two rows, follow the manufacturer’s prescribed interpolation or conservative lookup rule; this reference does not add a new interpolation method.

Finish the belt calculation

After finding G, continue through the manual’s full method, including belt length correction, speed ratio, power rating for the chosen section and service factor. These inputs determine the belt count and must be checked together.

A drive’s actual condition can include shock, starts, temperature, contamination or limited ventilation. Ask the belt supplier to review unusual duty or a design near the rating boundary.

Do not treat G as a performance guarantee

A correction factor modifies a calculation; it does not predict actual belt life or account for every installation condition. Correct tension, alignment, pulley condition and guarding still matter to the reliability of the drive.

Use the factor with the cited manual only as a reference. A current product-specific selection should be checked against the latest belt manufacturer guidance and actual service requirements.
