Milling Material Removal Rate Calculator
Calculate the volume of material removed per minute during a steady milling cut. Enter axial depth, radial engagement, and table feed. The calculator reports a volume rate in metric or US customary units.
Material removal rate (MRR) describes the volume removed per unit time. It helps compare cut conditions, but it does not establish that a tool, machine, or workholding setup can sustain the cut.

Formula and units
For metric inputs, Q = ap × ae × vf ÷ 1000, where ap is axial depth in millimetres, ae is radial engagement in millimetres, and vf is table feed in millimetres per minute. The result is cubic centimetres per minute. The divisor 1,000 converts cubic millimetres to cubic centimetres.
Worked example
At 2 mm axial depth, 5 mm radial engagement, and 600 mm/min feed, the volume rate is 2 × 5 × 600 ÷ 1,000 = 6 cm³/min. The same result is 6,000 mm³/min, or about 0.366 in³/min.
The formula and variable definitions are published in Sandvik Coromant’s milling formulas. The equation assumes the full rectangular cross-section is engaged for the entered feed. It is a geometric rate, not a measured chip-flow value.
Read the result in context
Actual engagement changes through corners, entry and exit moves, toolpath transitions, and interrupted cuts. Chip thinning can affect the feed choice, especially at low radial engagement. Cutting force and machine power also depend on the material, cutter geometry, tool condition, and process. This calculator does not estimate power, torque, temperature, deflection, or tool life.
Use cutting parameters recommended for your tool and material. Check spindle speed, feed limits, available power, tool reach, coolant, and workholding before increasing the rate. For RPM and table-feed calculations, use the milling speeds and feeds calculator. For elapsed time from a known path and feed, see the machining time calculator.
