Home » Bolt Grade Markings and Mechanical Properties

SAE J429 bolt markings help identify a fastener grade, while the applicable specification and size determine its mechanical requirements. This selected reference compares common inch-series Grade 1, 2, 5 and 8 values by nominal diameter. A mark on a bolt head is a useful identification clue, but it does not replace a material test report, lot traceability or verification against the current purchase specification. Check the fastener form, length, diameter and governing standard before using a row.

Reading the grade and strength columns

The rows use proof load, minimum yield strength and minimum tensile strength as separate properties. Proof load is a specified test stress used to check whether a fastener withstands a load without unacceptable permanent extension. Yield strength describes the onset of specified permanent deformation under the test method. Tensile strength is the minimum stress associated with the tensile test requirement. These values are not interchangeable and are not allowable design stresses by themselves.

The table keeps the SAE J429 inch-series size bands in inches and strength values in pounds per square inch. Grade 2 has two size bands in the source summary, and its shorter-size requirements include a length condition for bolts: the listed Grade 2 requirements for 1/4 through 3/4 inch bolts apply to bolts 6 inches long or shorter, while the source states that longer bolts use Grade 1 requirements. Studs are treated differently in that note. Grade 5 also changes property values above 1 inch. Match the row to the actual nominal diameter instead of using one value for an entire grade.

Common SAE head marks

For common SAE J429 hex-head products, Grade 5 is identified by three radial lines and Grade 8 by six radial lines, together with the manufacturer’s identification. The cited marking guide says Grade 2 requires manufacturer identification but no separate grade numeral or radial-line pattern. Marking requirements can depend on product type and applicable edition; do not apply these patterns to ASTM fasteners or other systems without checking their own specification.

Grade 1 is included as a mechanical-property reference row, but this brief dataset does not use a head-mark pattern to identify it. A low-strength appearance or missing mark is not positive evidence of a particular grade. Preserve the supplier’s documentation when identification matters.

Worked selection example

Suppose a design drawing calls for an SAE J429 Grade 5 bolt with a nominal diameter of 7/8 inch. The applicable row is the Grade 5 band from 1/4 through 1 inch, which lists 85,000 psi full-size proof load, 92,000 psi minimum yield strength and 120,000 psi minimum tensile strength. The three-line head pattern is consistent with common Grade 5 marking practice, but the mark alone does not verify heat, chemistry, testing or lot conformity. The purchase documentation and current standard still control.

Limits and common mistakes

Do not infer installation torque from proof load or tensile strength. Torque depends on thread geometry, lubrication, coatings, joint stiffness and the required preload method. Do not assume two bolts with similar dimensions are interchangeable because their nominal diameters match. Alloy, heat treatment, thread class, head style, length, coating and product standard can all change suitability.

This is a compact summary of common SAE J429 grades, not the entire standard. It excludes less common grades and variations, metric fastener classes, nut properties, fatigue performance and corrosion behavior. Use the current SAE specification and the fastener manufacturer’s technical documents for a controlled design or acceptance decision. A qualified engineer should determine the required joint strength, safety factors and installation procedure from the actual service loads and governing code.
